Russian team at Belgrade-2016 European championships

We brought a rather rejuvenated side to this tournament. Compared to the European championships 2014 in Budapest 10 new players made the team this time. In addition, six players have been replaced after the world championships 2015 in Kazan. I will reveal a little ‘secret’ that there are the players in Russia who have not been selected to play in Belgrade who arguably considered as being more experienced and having better level of skills. That is because our main selection criteria on this occasion were the athlete’s attitude towards training and their playing and general discipline as well as readiness to put the interests of the team ahead of their own.

Our main objective for these European championships was to make top eight thus securing a place at the Olympic Qualification tournament to be held Trieste, Italy in April 2016. The current members of the Russian team have justified our expectations by their performance. I am pleased to say that we have made a correct decision by honoring them with an opportunity of playing for the National team of Russia.
