Kazan-2015 world championships: comment

Even though for the last one and a half years, I have been working with the Russian senior squad I am following the progress of the Australian men’s team. Of course, in Kazan, I made an effort to watch most of its matches.

I liked what I saw. The Australian side was disciplined, fast and strong displaying impressive individual and collective skills. My opinion – without going into detailed analysis here – is the team’s performance against Japan, Montenegro, Serbia and, in particular, in a crucial quarter-final match against a very fine team of Greece, was good. Head Coach, Elvis Fatovic’s explanation regarding the last match with the US and its outcome stands to reason.

The Australian squad has good core of experienced players. And few youngsters have been blooded in a most serious competition – it is impossible to emulate anywhere else the match incandescence that world championships and Olympic Games’ tournaments bring. I am convinced, that experience and the right culture will help this team put a good performance in Rio next year.

I extend my congratulations to Elvis, his assistants and the athletes for their performance at the 2015 world championships and wish them well at the Olympiad-2016!

Congratulations to Russia for excellent organization of the event! The venue – “Water Polo Arena” – was perfect. The volunteers were very polite and attentive, many speaking foreign languages. Good spectator attendance coupled with creative entertainment brought fantastic atmosphere during most matches. Thousands of ordinary people – among them young and old, families with children and singles - enjoyed water polo matches even though many came to see them for the first time. Every session presented as dynamic interactive spectacle thus compensating for lack of understanding of the game’s intricacies by ordinary people. It would not be an overstatement to say that Kazan-2015 world championships were one of the best ever.
