An old photograph from 1982

The photograph was made in 1982 at the Sheremetyevo International airport in Moscow upon the Soviet team’s arrival from Ecuador. In that year we won the world championships – held in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil – for the second time in history.

In another post (Cold War Foe – Good Time Keeper) I have written how – from our perspective – the events unfolded there. As described in the article, the final game’s scenario between Hungary and the USSR happened to be very dramatic. At the time of writing those memories, I did not have the photo and was happy to recall the whole event again recently, in particular the gold medal match.

During the 2014 European championships in Budapest, I had several happy encounters with some members of the 1982 Hungarian team. Among them was legendary Tamas Farago. Here is the photograph taken 32 years after the Guayaquil WC.
