A triple Olympian, Thomas Whalan, has provided the below material. Thomas is a member of the Australian squad preparing for the Olympic games in London-12. Whilst training hard, he has also been busy organizing this event. It promises to be an exciting night!
This has been something I have been wanting to put together throughout my career to properly promote our wonderful sport and the Australian Sharks Team to a crowd not traditionally captured by water polo in Australia. This event has as the number 1 priority promoting our sport at the top level to as wide a reach as possible.
The game promises to be a great hit-out against two fierce rivals; the top 2 non-European teams in the world and the first time they’ve come together for some time. As you mentioned in your previous article, the US has some great players, had a very successful Olympics in Beijing and many of those players are back to try and go one better in London. The Australian team is full of great talent with a good mix of young and old and I believe we’re on a successful path with more time spent preparing together as a team. The entire squad including overseas based players will be available to play in this game and the following 2 test matches against the USA at Homebush and on to the Pan Pacific Games in Melbourne the following week. It is rare that we are able to bring together the entire squad over this period.
The night will also include entertainment from the internationally acclaimed duo of DJ Bambalam and Jonny Pow. Lucky door prizes include 2 x return flights to Bali, transfers, 7 nights in Villa de Tee Ink and a personal maid. A big thanks to Tee Ink for this wonderful prize. Budgy Smuggler has been a huge supporter of the event and will be providing costumes for the Australian Sharks. Invisible Zinc is also a major sponsor providing great support and the IZ girls will be distributing freebies to spectators. Other big supporters of the event include: Enrizen Financial Group, Sports Tax International – Willett Johnston Partners, Grays Online, Jacques Lemans (Official Timekeeper), Hypoxi, Peter Morrissey, Bondi Icebergs, Scooda Promotional Product Marketing, Carlton United Breweries, Yalumba, Fiji Water, Nudie, VnC Cocktails, Dupe, MissChu and Gelatissimo, Biotherm, Red Bull.
There will be a VIP marquee – The “Budgy Birdcage” hosted by Budgy Smuggler and Invisible Zinc including Media, sponsors and celebrity guests. Many of the sponsors have provided product to make this possible and we only wish we could house even more guests however demand through PR agencies has been extremely high. We invite all spectators to enjoy the wonderful service upstairs of Bondi Icebergs for dinner and a fully licensed bar will be operating during and post-match.
Ticket demand has been extremely high and due to the limited capacity at Bondi Icebergs I encourage all spectators to pre-purchase tickets online and arrive at the pool before 6pm. Tickets can be purchase via https://www.stickytickets.com.au/7264. We have a Facebook Event page, just search for “Budgy Smuggler Water Polo by the Sea” and an informational website at http://goodsie.com/store/waterpolo_by_the_sea.
Keep a look out for the event in the media in coming days and I look forward to a great night of Water Polo!!
